Hydro-seeding, also referred to as hydromulching, is a grass planting and lawn establishment process used in both residential and commercial applications. Compared to seed and straw, hydro-seeding is fast and efficient, as well very economical when compared with sod. It is highly effective for erosion control projects and is quickly becoming a popular option for lawns.

How does hydro-seeding work?

Hydro-seeding is the simple procedure of mixing grass seed, fertilizer, hydro mulch and water in one liquified application. Various soil enhancements may also be added to the mixture if called for by environmental needs. After as few as 5-7 days the seed will germinate and in about 3-4 weeks you should see most of the lawn filled in depending on how often the lawn is watered. It can take up to 8 weeks to see strong growth, depending on what kind of grass seed is used.

Most types of grass seed can be used in the mixture, climate conditions typically dictate what type will best suited for your application needs.

How to maintain a hydro-seeded lawn:

Newly hydro-seeded lawns should be watered as much as 2-3 times a day, taking care not to saturate or over water. This will help the seed to germinate well and helps to develop a strong root system. Achieving a consistently moist area will give the best germination results.

It’s best to fertilize the lawn about 4-6 weeks after the initial application with a nitrogen rich fertilizer.

A good practice is to avoid walking on the newly seeded lawn for as long as possible…The lawn should be mowed when the lawn reaches 3-4 inches in height.
